Local Holiday To Be Declared In 10 Assam Districts For Ali Ai Ligang Celebration

GUWAHATI: The state government is set to announce a local holiday in 10 districts of Assam in celebration of Ali Ai Ligang as per a statement made by MLA Pijush Hazarika on November 9. 

Addressing a public gathering in Jonai, Lakhimpur, Minister Hazarika criticised the Congress party for their failure to fulfill promises during their 60-year rule, pointing out the lack of development. 

Discussing the Orunodoi scheme for women in the state, Hazarika revealed plans to add more beneficiaries to the scheme and increase the existing beneficiary amount from ₹1200 to ₹1450 soon.

In addition to these announcements, Pijush Hazarika inaugurated the construction of a new building for the Water Resources Department's Jonai Water Resources Sub-Division Office in the Dhemaji district on November 9.

Ali-Aye-Ligang or Ali-Ai-Ligang is a spring festivity associated with agriculture celebrated by the Mising or Mishing tribal people of Assam and other Northeast Indian states on the occasion of the beginning of the Ahu paddy cultivation. The festival marks the onset of sowing seeds. The name of the festival is made up of three terms, "Ali", legumes, "Aye", seed and "Ligang", to sow. The festival begins on the first Wednesday of the Phalguna.
