Liquor Shops to Remain Shut Until Completion of New MRP Labelling on Bottles

GUWAHATI: After the state government decided to increase the maximum retain price (MRP) by 25% on all segments of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), beer, wine and overseas products with effect from 9th May, the excise department has issued a new order to shut down liquor shops until stickers showing the new MRPs are pasted on the old stock.

As per the new order, retail vendors are not allowed to sell or lift any excise product till the new MRP is registered by the excise department.

Talking to G Plus, the proprietor of a liquor shop of Guwahati said, "The excise inspector has asked us to provide detailed report of our inventory and has told us not to open our shops until further notice."

Reportedly, as of now, liquor stores and wholesale warehouses in Assam are to remain closed until complete labelling of the new MRP masking the old price has been completed.

Further, all excise licensees are to deposit additional excise duty and VAT arising out of the difference between the new and old MRPs.

The bottling plants and breweries have also been directed to arrange for pasting of new stickers over the old MRP.
