ECI Imposes Silence Period For Assam Lok Sabha Elections 2024

 

GUWAHATI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the imposition of a silence period for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Assam, in accordance with the provisions of the Representation of Peoples’ Act, 1951.

As per the directives issued by the ECI, the election campaign for all three phases of the Assam Lok Sabha Election 2024 will conclude 48 hours prior to the end of the poll. Specifically, the campaign in all the Highly Polled Constituencies (HPCs) under Phase I will cease at 5 pm on April 17, 2024.

During this silence period, strict regulations will be enforced, prohibiting the convening, holding, or attendance of public meetings, processions, and other election-related activities. Additionally, the use of loudspeakers on vehicles or any other apparatus for propagating election matter to the public is strictly forbidden.

Furthermore, the dissemination of exit or opinion poll results through any media, including print, electronic, or otherwise, is prohibited during this period. The media has been instructed to refrain from broadcasting or publishing programmes that predict election outcomes, including those by astrologers, tarot readers, and political analysts.

The objective behind this prohibition is to ensure a period of silence for the electors in the lead-up to the polling day, allowing them to make informed decisions without external influences.
