Lawyer Fraternity Condoles Death of Senior Advocate Deba Kumar Bhattacharyya

GUWAHATI: Designated Senior Advocate and a doyen of Assam's legal fraternity, Deba Kumar Bhattacharyya has left for his heavenly abode on 16th January.  He was 88 years old, a resident of Uzan Bazaar, and has succumbed owing to old-age related ailments.

"His passing away marks a remarkable loss for the fraternity, which has lost one of its most versatile and charismatic Senior Advocates," Saiten Sharma, a senior advocate of Gauhati High Court told G Plus.

"He was famous for his authority on civil and constitutional law in the Bar. During the '70s when the hippie culture was in,  police personnel used to catch youngsters and cut their long hair. Deba Kumar Bhattacharyya reportedly grew his hair long and appeared in High Court and dared anyone to question on their personal liberty," reminisced Mrinmoy Khatoniar, a senior advocate of Gauhati HC.

He is survived by his wife, three children, and grandchildren. One of his sons is a District Judge at Dima Hasao. His son-in-law is a sitting Judge of the Gauhati High Court.

Bhattacharyya's last rites will be conducted at the Nabagraha Crematorium today.
