The law has already been drafted, to curb cases of deception in marriage. Sarma said that many cases of deception have been received, where the groom hides his real identity and religion before marriage.

“Marriage is considered as one of the holiest acts. It should happen in circumstances where there is no fraud and no cheating. The law will ensure that nobody can provide false identity, false religion and basically, you cannot hide your religious identity to get married even in social media or otherwise. We have drafted a law. We have seen the laws enacted in other states also," he said.

As marriage is a voluntary engagement between two individuals, no element of cheating should be involved.

The ‘Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Ordinance, 2020’ has already been approved by the Uttar Pradesh government, and the states of Haryana and Madhya Pradesh have also announced the imposition of such laws in the near future.
