Largest Medical College of Eastern India to be Constructed in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Health minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a series of infrastructural development schemes on 12th September, amounting to Rs. 10,000 crores.


Under this scheme, the Assam government has approved the construction of four new medical colleges starting from December 2020 in Charaideo, Biswanath Chariali, Goalpara, and Guwahati.


The second medical college in the city will be a merger of the present Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) and the Kalapahar TB Hospital. The said project will presumably be the largest medical college in Eastern India, with 800 beds in MMCH and 500 beds in the Kalapahar hospital. 


A 12 storeyed building is to be constructed at the premises of the present MMCH, facing the Brahmaputra river.


Assam government has approved Rs. 250 crores for the construction of the four medical college hospitals.
