GUWAHATI: The Assam Cabinet has announced the de-reservation of Village Grazing Reserve/Professional Grazing Reserve (VGR/PGR) land in Golaghat district. The announcement was made on January 22 during the Cabinet meeting.
The move is accompanied by the reservation of an equivalent quantum of land as VGR/PGR in Golaghat. Additionally, the decision outlines the settlement of seven landless indigenous families on the de-reserved VGR/PGR land.
This decision, aimed at fostering inclusive land policies, plans to address historical land-related issues. The de-reservation of VGR/PGR land and its subsequent allocation to indigenous families is intended to provide a solution to the landless communities.
The proposed VGR/PGR land slated for de-reservation is reported to have been under the occupation of indigenous landless families before January 1, 2011. The Cabinet's decision, therefore, considers historical occupancy and seeks to rectify land-related disparities by settling these families on the designated area.
