Lachit Borphukan’s 400th Birth Anniversary To Be Celebrated In New Delhi

GUWAHATI: November 24 is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lachit Barphukan every year. This year the Assam Government plans to celebrate Barphukan’s 400th birth anniversary in a grand manner in Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. 

The event will be celebrated on November 23, 24, and 25, 2022 in New Delhi. Several dignitaries including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and others will grace the occasion. 400 students and 300 eminent persons will be sent to New Delhi from across Assam.

On November 16, a theme song has been launched to commemorate Barphukan. Chief Minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the theme song, at Janata Bhawan, Dispur, Guwahati. Earlier on October 26, the Assam Government had also launched an app where people could write about Barphukan. The Chief Minister said that so far 1.5 lakh writeups have been submitted in the app.

Speaking to the media, Water Resource Minister, Pijush Hazarika said, “the Mughals were only defeated by the Marathas and Ahoms. The Maratha leader Chhatrapati Shivaji is well-known worldwide for defeating the Mughals. However, enough light has not been shed upon Ahom commander, Barphukan, and his success against the Mughals. To change this current scenario, Assam Government has decided to celebrate Lachit Divas in New Delhi on a grand scale.

From November 18 to 25 various extensive programmes have been lined up across Assam. 

On November 18, several programmes will be organised at the district level. Police along with NCC (National Cadet Corps) cadets will perform a parade.
On November 19, Universities, Colleges, and schools across the state will participate in an essay writing competition.
On November 20, the government will acquire fifty bighas of land from the people of Jorhat. The government will compensate with ₹ 12 crores for the land acquired. The said land will be utilised to make a memorial for Barphukan.
On November 21 and 22 other programmes like sports events, cultural events, debate competitions, extempore speeches, etc will take place.
