GUWAHATI: The fire of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) over fees hike has now reached in to the gates of premier universities of northeast.
Students from Cotton University and Tezpur University condemned against the hostel fee hike in the JNU hostel.
The Cotton University Students’ Union said that it is not a protest for a single university but a protest by students against the barbarity constrained upon them in the name of education.
On the other hand, the Tezpur University Students’ Council (TUSC) condemning the fees hike said that the actions taken agaist the interests of the students of the JNU is simply inhuman.
A press release by TUSC stated “The treatment meted out to the students by the police personnel was against the basic grounds of human rights and violates Article 19 of the Indian Constitution that states the Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression.”
It is to be mentioned that the JNU students' protest against the fee hike has entered close to two weeks after draft of hostel manual was issued that includes provisions including hostel fee hike, dress code and curfew timings.
According to reports, JNU had increased the double room rent from Rs. 10 to Rs. 300 per month, single room rent from Rs. 20 to Rs. 600 per month and the one-time refundable mess security deposit from Rs. 5,500 to Rs. 12,000.
