Jishnu Barua Appointed as New Chief Secretary of Assam

Guwahati: Additional chief secretary Jishnu Barua will take over as the chief secretary of Assam on October 31.


Barua will take charge from the outgoing chief secretary, Kumar Sanjay Krishna, who will retire on October 31, 2020.


Jishnu Barua is currently in-charge of home & political, revenue & DM secretariat administration and border protection & development, implementation of Assam Accord departments.


Barua, an Assam-Meghalaya cadre IAS officer of the 1988 batch, is slated to retire on September 30, 2022.


He is a Graduate in Philosophy and Post Graduate in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University. He is an avid reader who has a vast collection of books, both fiction and non-fiction. He is an ardent Cricket fan and is also fond of traveling. 

 

In his service career in the State Government of Assam, Shri Barua had served in several important capacities such as SDO (Civil) Abhayapuri, Deputy Commissioner NC Hills in 1994-95, Deputy Commissioner Jorhat in 1996-97, Managing Director of Assam Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC), Commissioner & Secretary, Personnel, Home & Political Departments, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister of Assam, etc. 

 

He had also been on Central Deputation earlier from 2001 to 2006 and had served as Private Secretary to Union Minister of State for Commerce, Planning, Atomic Energy, and Space along with Statistics and Programme Implementation and later as Director (Police) in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. From 2014 to 2017, he served in the Government of India as Joint Secretary, Services, Vigilance and Training.
