Israeli PM Netanyahu Dismisses Defence Minister Yoav Gallant Over ‘Lack Of Trust’

GUWAHATI: In a surprising move, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on Tuesday, November 5, citing “significant gaps” and a “crisis of trust” between them. The announcement has sparked concerns amid Israel’s ongoing conflicts on multiple fronts.

The decision follows months of internal tensions over the handling of the war in Gaza. While Netanyahu pressed for sustained military action against Hamas, Gallant reportedly favoured a more pragmatic approach, suggesting that military gains had opened doors for diplomatic solutions, including possible negotiations for hostage releases. Netanyahu reportedly explained that although trust between them was strong at the beginning of the campaign, it had eroded in recent months, affecting cooperation.

Gallant, a former general respected for his steadfastness and close ties with U.S. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, reaffirmed his commitment to Israel’s security, calling it “my life’s mission.” Gallant’s removal is not Netanyahu’s first attempt to dismiss him—an earlier attempt in March 2023 led to significant public protests, and further consideration over the summer was ultimately delayed.

Replacing Gallant is Israel Katz, the current Foreign Minister and a Netanyahu ally with extensive Cabinet experience and a military background. Gideon Saar, a former rival of Netanyahu, will take over the foreign affairs portfolio. In his statement, Netanyahu expressed disappointment that his attempts to bridge their differences had failed, ultimately undermining public trust and potentially empowering Israel’s adversaries.
