Inmate Receives Gold Medal For Excelling In Exam In Assam

GUWAHATI: An undertrial prisoner in Guwahati central jail, who was allegedly involved in a grenade blast in Guwahati at the behest of ULFA in 2019, has topped the PG examination under the open state university and was awarded a gold medal by the varsity’s chancellor and Assam Governor at a convocation, as per reports.

Sanjib Talukdar, 29, a former student leader of Assam, was arrested along with three others in connection with the blast that left 12 injured in 2019.

In the same year, the case was transferred to NIA, which charged Sanjib with conspiracy, unlawful activities and providing help and support to the main accused in the case.

Before topping his class in sociology this year, he completed his master's from Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University (KKHSOU) while remaining lodged in the same jail.

Every jail in the state of Assam has an open university for the inmates to complete their education if they want to.

Governor of Assam, Prof Jagdish Mukhi presented the gold medal to Sanjib, who had scored 71 per cent marks at the convocation on February 2 in Guwahati. Sanjib was pursuing M Phil in Botany in Gauhati University when he was arrested.

It has further been reported that Sanjib could not complete his M-Phil as he had no access to laboratory facilities from the jail.

During his days as a student, he was the president of the Post Graduate Students' Union of Gauhati University.

A former jailor of Guwahati central jail said that Sanjib was always keen on gaining knowledge and appeared for a PG certificate in Geoinformatics from KKHSOU, as per reports.
