The Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA), which represents approximately 20 media companies, has claimed that OpenAI’s tools unlawfully use their copyrighted content.

The DNPA's 135-page filing alleged that OpenAI's tools scrape websites to store and reproduce copyrighted material, posing “a clear and present danger” to the rights of its members.

The media organisations also argued that, while OpenAI has secured agreements with international media outlets, it has failed to establish similar partnerships in India.

The lawsuit further accused OpenAI of exploiting creative efforts for profit, undermining the media industry and contributing to a “weakened press.”

This legal challenge follows a recent copyright infringement complaint filed by Indian and international book publishers, including Penguin Random House, Bloomsbury, and Rupa Publications, through the Federation of Indian Publishers. Filed in the Delhi High Court, this complaint sought to prevent OpenAI’s ChatGPT from accessing proprietary content.
