According to official data, Gujarat has reported five cases, Maharashtra three, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu two each, and Assam one till date. The virus, which primarily affects the respiratory system, has prompted intensified precautions in affected regions.
Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel recently addressed the situation, confirming the virus's presence and emphasising that HMPV is one of many seasonal respiratory infections. The state government has issued an advisory to manage and prevent further spread.
Following the sudden surge of the virus, a 10-month-old infant from Assam was also tested positive the previous week, marking the state’s first recorded case of HMPV.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has attributed this surge in HMPV cases to typical seasonal trends and warned of the additional strain these infections place on healthcare systems during winter.
