The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) released data on the worldwide natural disasters on 13th October, on the occasion of International Day for Disaster Reduction.

Although the United Nations refrained from publishing country-specific data, it has given a report of the number of natural disasters that have hit in the last 20 years, from 2000 to 2019.

As per the data, India ranks third in recording the highest number of natural disasters over the last twenty years after China and United States of America (USA).

The report stated that the world economy has lost an estimated $3 trillion in the two decades due to the same reason.

A total of 7,348 natural disasters were reported during this period, 91 percent of which were floods, storm, landslide, heat waves, drought, and wildfire, all extreme weather conditions.

Comparatively, the world recorded 4,212 incidents between 1980 and 1999.
