GUWAHATI: India secured a 295-run victory over Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Perth’s Optus Stadium on Monday, November 25. This victory marks the former’s return to the top of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) standings, also making them the first team to defeat Australia at this venue.

Coming on the back of a 3-0 home series defeat against New Zealand, the triumph marked a turnaround for India, as missing key players, including captain Rohit Sharma and batter Shubman Gill faced intense scrutiny ahead of the series opener.

Yet, stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah orchestrated the win, as he claimed eight wickets in the match, including a game-changing spell on day one after India were bowled out for just 150. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal shone in India’s second innings, with both scoring centuries to put the game out of Australia’s reach.

Australia showed resistance on the fourth day through counterattacks by Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh, but India’s victory was sealed after tea when Harshit Rana dismissed Alex Carey.

Remarkably, Kohli’s century was his seventh in Australia, the most by any Indian batter in Test history.
