Virat Kohli Breaks Indian Record Of Most Number Of Test Centuries In Australia

 

GUWAHATI: Virat Kohli etched his name in history on Sunday by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most Test centuries by an Indian in Australia. Kohli achieved the milestone during the third session on Day 3 of the opening Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Optus Stadium, reaching his 30th Test hundred.

While Tendulkar scored six Test centuries in Australia during his illustrious career, Kohli has now notched up seven in just 14 matches. His latest feat also ties him with Ricky Ponting for the most centuries in India-Australia Tests played in Australia.

Kohli brought up his century with a boundary off Marnus Labuschagne during the 135th over of India’s second innings. His commanding knock lasted 143 balls and featured eight fours and two sixes. Partnering debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy (38 off 27 balls), Kohli added an unbeaten 77-run stand for the seventh wicket.

Following Kohli’s landmark, India declared at 487/6 after 134.3 overs, setting a formidable target of 534 runs for Australia.

This century marks Kohli’s second at the Optus Stadium, following a brilliant 123 in the 2018 Border-Gavaskar series. He remains the only Indian batter to score two centuries at this venue. Overall, five Indian players have achieved centuries in Perth. Kohli’s recent performance also saw him surpass Rahul Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara in the tally of most runs in India-Australia Tests. His last Test century came against the West Indies in Port of Spain in July 2024, reaffirming his return to sublime form.
