Indefinite Bus Strike Over Fare Hike to Continue in Assam

GUWAHATI: The indefinite strike called by the All Assam Motor Transport Association (AAMTA) is set to continue after talks with the government fail.

Earlier, the Assam government decided to intervene in the situation. As such, the AAMTA and state government were set to discuss the issue and come to a solution on Tuesday, October 6. However, during the meeting, the government did not succeed in meeting the demands of the bus operators.

"The talks have failed with the government and the indefinite strike will continue," Pradip Das, Chairman of AAMTA told G Plus.

The city bus operators called for a Chakka bandh after demands were made for fare hike for the commercial vehicles as relief measures from the state government to offset losses suffered due to COVID-19. At present, the buses are operating with 50% of passengers’ capacity with the same fares as earlier. The owners have been critical of this.

The strike has hindered the movement of citizens in the city who commute daily in the buses.

Meanwhile, the government-run Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses were operational to provide bus services for the citizens. The ASTC buses have not been adequate to cater to the demand of the passengers. The COVID-19 protocol of 50% capacity has also reduced passenger intake. Many bus stops were seen crowded as a result.

"They are taking fewer people with 50% capacity. Also, there are only ASTC buses plying, which is not enough," said a lady waiting to board at the Christian Basti bus stop.
