GUWAHATI: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) suspended Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital and also the vice president of the IMA's Kolkata branch, on Wednesday, August 28. This decision comes amid a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the college earlier this month.

The suspension decision to suspend Ghosh was made by the IMA’s disciplinary committee, led by National President R.V. Asokan.
The order mentioned that the National President and other IMA officials had visited the victim's parents. The parents had complained about Ghosh’s lack of empathy and improper handling of the situation, which they felt was not appropriate given his position.
“The undersigned along with the National President had also visited the parents of the victim in their home. They had put up their grievances against you in dealing with the situation as well as lack of empathy and sensitivity in handling the issue in an appropriate manner befitting the responsibility held by you in your dealings with them.”
The order also notes, “IMA Bengal state branch as well as certain associations of doctors also have demanded action citing the nature of disrepute brought by you to the profession on the whole.”
As a result, The disciplinary committee of IMA HQs has unanimously decided to suspend Sandip Ghosh IMA membership.
Dr. Ghosh has been under scrutiny since the incident on August 9. He resigned as principal of RG Kar Medical College on August 12, but was promptly appointed as the principal of another medical college, which raised concerns about his new appointment.
