GUWAHATI: IITs like IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee are becoming top picks for the toppers of JEE along with the already established choices like IIT Bombay and Delhi, as per reports.

The recently released Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) report for 2023 sheds light on the evolving preferences of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced toppers when selecting Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Since 2019, IIT Bombay has consistently been the first choice for the top 1,000 candidates, with IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur following closely.

Interestingly, newer IITs and converted institutes are witnessing fluctuations in popularity. IIT Roorkee, among the older engineering colleges turned IITs, is gaining favour, while others like IIT Guwahati are seeing an active surge in the selection of their institute with 63 candidates selecting the institute in 2023 as compared to 55 candidates in 2019.

According to the report, IIT Bombay remains a stronghold for JEE Advanced toppers, albeit experiencing a decline in recent years. In 2023, 245 candidates from the top 1,000 opted for IIT Bombay, compared to 265 in 2021. IIT Delhi secured the second position, attracting the highest number of top-rank holders in 2022 with 210 candidates. IIT Kanpur saw the highest number in 2023, with 120 toppers choosing the institute.

The trends also indicate a change in preference for some newer IITs. IIT Hyderabad, established in 2008, is on the rise, while IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Ropar (both founded in 2008), and IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad (converted to IIT in 2016) have seen a single topper opting for each in 2020, 2021, and 2022, respectively.
