GUWAHATI: IIT Guwahati and Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) have jointly developed a specialised anti-moss paint to reduce maintenance costs and improve structural durability of railway bridges in the Northeast.

This new paint has been introduced to prevent biological scaling, particularly moss growth, which is common in the region’s humid and rain-heavy climate. It includes advanced chemical compounds that inhibit moss growth and prevent corrosion. These properties have been expected to enhance safety and reduce long-term repair costs for the NFR in the long term.
According to reports, the new paint has already been applied to the 2.5-km-long Naranarayan Setu, a rail-cum-road bridge over the Brahmaputra river. The bridge connects Pancharatna in Goalpara district with Jogighopa in Bongaigaon district, and its painting work was completed in March.
NFR’s chief public relations officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma reportedly confirmed the development, stating that the paint’s durability and effectiveness will be closely monitored during the upcoming monsoon season.
If found successful, it will be used on all railway bridges under NFR by October.
