GUWAHATI: With a view to assuage the sentiments of those protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday said that he is the son of the soil and has never done anything to let Assamese people down.

“Being a son of the soil, I will never allow any foreign immigrant to settle in my land,” said the chief minister.

He further added that the previous government disregarded the clauses of the Assam Accord. He mentioned that this government is well aware of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord and would ensure constitutional safeguards for indigenous people of Assam.

Sonowal also stressed that no foreign immigrant can come to Assam as a result of Citizenship Amendment Act, nor shall they let them come in.

“By no means can the Act affect the demography of Assam,” said the CM.

“Do not ostracize me, where will I go if you banish me?” said Sonowal in an emotional appeal.
