Husband-Wife Duo from Guwahati Feature in World’s Top 2% Scientists’ List

GUWAHATI: Scientists from Assam have been garnering laurels and securing a special position for the state in the world’s science map. As many as 24 scientists from different educational institutions of the state have found rankings in the lists of world’s top 2% scientists’ list created by Stanford University, California.


Amongst them is interestingly a scientist couple from the state. They are Dr Nandana Bharadwaj and Dr Biman B Mandal. Dr Nandana Bharadwaj who has secured the 394th position in the primary field “Biomedical Engineering” is the wife of Dr Biman B Mandal of IIT Guwahati who holds the 234th position in the same subject.


Dr Bharadwaj specialises in soft tissue engineering and cartilage repair using biomaterial and stem cells. She has 27 internationally published articles to her credit while Dr Mandal has published 141 articles with 17 patents of which 4 are US citizens and 13 Indian.

While the former, a senior research scientist with a Stanvac-Superon Group, is associated with IIT-G as a guest faculty, the latter is a professor at biosciences and bioengineering department, and the associate dean of academics (UG) of the prestigious institution.


They expertise on using Indian endemic silk including the indigenous Muga and Eri silk of Assam to create cutting edge technologies in an effort to cater to the societal healthcare needs.


“We are in our late 30s and we feel the journey has just begun. Impact of our research contributions getting recognized so early in our academic career is an honour and we thank everyone who directly or indirectly contributed to our progress,” Dr Mandal told media. 


Other than the couple 21 more researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, and a former Gauhati University professor also features in the list.
