GUWAHATI: A household in Guwahati’s Sijubari has been held accountable and penalised for polluting the Basistha river by discharging waste directly into it by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC).

The household was caught discharging boring materials directly into the Basistha River during a surprise inspection conducted by the Deputy Enforcement Officer in collaboration with Division 5 officials.
The illegal activity, which posed a significant threat to the river's ecosystem, was immediately halted, and the discharge point was sealed on the spot. Authorities imposed a penalty of ₹50,000 on the household for contributing to environmental pollution and endangering public health.
GMC took to X to put out, “A household in Sijubari, Ward 42, was found discharging boring materials directly into the Basistha River. The activity was promptly sealed during a drive by the Deputy Enforcement Officer and Division 5 officials. A penalty of ₹ 50,000/- was imposed for causing environmental pollution and hazardous discharge into the river. Let’s work together to protect our waterways! Our Guwahati, Our responsibility!
