This initiative follows a similar beautification effort carried out earlier in March under the Ganeshguri flyover.

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has been actively working on enhancing urban spaces, with the  Mayor-in-Council meeting in March 2024 discussing the construction of permanent traffic islands to improve pedestrian safety.

The newly painted stretches in Paltan Bazar aim to not only add festive cheer but also introduce elements of Tactical Urbanism—an approach to making city spaces more accessible and citizen-friendly.

On March 10, 2024 GMC Commissioner MN Dahal shared an aerial view of the colorful stretch on social media, stating, "Something interesting is coming up underneath the Ganeshguri flyover. In what we call Tactical Urbanism, DoHUA, GoA is experimenting with improving city spaces to be more citizen-friendly. Really excited to see the outcome!"

Paltan Bazar, along with Ganeshguri, remains one of Guwahati’s busiest and most congested areas, often posing challenges for pedestrians. The proposed traffic island and street painting initiative aim to enhance pedestrian movement while streamlining traffic flow.
