GUWAHATI: Footpaths near the Ulubari Flyover in Lachit Nagar are in a severe state of disrepair, creating a frustrating and hazardous experience for pedestrians. A section of the footpath has completely vanished, leaving pedestrians, especially the elderly and disabled, with no choice but to navigate through risky sections.

Locals in the area report that the remaining footpath has also been taken over by street dwellers, turning it into an unhygienic and foul-smelling space that pedestrians try to avoid. The situation has left the footpath virtually unusable, with many locals raising concerns over the lack of action from the Public Works Department (PWD).
One local resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, voiced frustration, stating, “We have filed multiple complaints, but nothing seems to move the authorities. Walking here every day has become unbearable.” Another pedestrian remarked, “It’s not just unpleasant; it’s unsafe. We worry for elderly people who can’t manage to walk on the roads here.”
Despite ongoing complaints from the public, significant improvements are yet to be seen. When contacted, a PWD official assured, “We have barricaded the portion and plan to restore it soon.” However, the local community remains sceptical, urging the department to expedite the process to provide a safe and clean footpath for all.
The lack of urgency from the authorities has triggered criticism from residents who rely on this pathway daily. With the various constructions already worsening conditions in Guwahati, locals hope that this longstanding issue will finally be addressed.
