Guwahatians Risk Lives to Cross G.S. Road after Construction of Concrete Dividers

GUWAHATI: The construction of concrete dividers along the stretch of G.S Road now Srinmanta Sankerdev Path is proving to be a major inconvenience for citizens of Guwahati.

With jaywalking being a real concern, many people are endangering their lives to cross the road in busy areas, especially during rush hour traffic.

It should be mentioned that the dividers have been constructed in the full stretch of the road that covers prime areas in Guwahati such as G.S. Road, Christian Basti and Walford.

As of yet, there have been no provisions made for the construction of foot over bridges, and if a citizen has to cross the road, they have to walk for several hundred metres to find a break that will allow them to cross the road safely. There is one foot over bridge in Ulubari near the Hanuman Mandir and then none until Dispur Secretariat.

“Provisions have to be made to ensure that people do not cross the road in this manner as they are not only putting their own lives in danger, but also that of their fellow citizens who might be driving their cars or riding their bikes,” said a concerned citizen to G Plus.

“Solutions also have to be designed keeping in mind the dangers for women, children, older citizens and pregnant women. The FOB at Hanuman Mandir is a two storey climb and is not very accessible for pregnant women and older citizens,” said another Guwahatian to G Plus.

The failure of the administration to plan these amenities appropriately is also another concern. Several of the zebra crossings remain unmarked which makes it difficult for drivers/riders to commute.
