In a shocking incident in Panikhaiti area a youth fell off a local (tulunga) boat on Sunday afternoon. According to the police, on Sunday afternoon, the said youth Manoj Thakuria (Moon), a resident of ASEB Colony Narengi, had gone out for outing with his six friends.
The incident occurred near the Tamulbari Shiv Mandir area, where the boys were clicking selfies on a boat. Three of Thakuria’s friends swam back to safety but Thakuria wasn’t so lucky because he didn't know swimming.
The local police was informed immediately and a search and rescue operation was launched by a joint team of police and NDRF personnel who were successful in fishing out the body from the Brahmaputra river-bed. The body was later sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for post mortem analysis.
It is to be noted that this is not a lone incident and there have been reports of youths falling in the river, drowning while trying to take selfies.
