GUWAHATI: Bornali Baruah Saikia, a resident of Guwahati who was reported to be held captive in Nigeria is back with her family. She reached Guwahati two days ago.
As per multiple media reports, Bornali went to visit Nigeria to meet a friend but soon news about her being kidnapped and being held kidnapped surfaced. Reportedly Bornali's family even filed an FIR at the Dispur Police Station.
After multiple media reports portraying it as a kidnapping case, GPlus talked to a senior police official who shed some new light on the situation.
As per the sources, Bornali’s husband introduced her and her family members to an individual from Nigeria about six months back on social media. The man came to know about the family pretty well. Eventually, with time, Bornali and the Nigerian grew close to each other through chats and video calls.
With time, she decided to meet the man whom she had only conversed with on social media till then by flying to Nigeria on a tourist visa.
While speaking to GPlus, a senior police official shared, "It was not at all a case of kidnapping. Both Bornali and the man from Nigeria were in contact for a significant amount of time. She later decided to visit his country (Nigeria). We've evidence about her well-being while she was in Nigeria. It wouldn't have been possible for her to return if the passport was snatched from her."
“When she extended her stay, the family panicked and filed an FIR,” said the official.
Earlier multiple regional and national media reports stated that Bornali was held captive and her documents including her passport and Visa were taken away from her. However, all of these turned out to be false and now she is back with her family safely.
