GUWAHATI: On the morning of November 30, a group of Swedish tourists visiting Guwahati was attracted to "Guwahati Walks," a recent effort launched by a few enthusiasts of the city's heritage and history. The group was guided by “Guwahati Walks “curators Ochintya Sharma and Bhrigu Talukdar around the picturesque 2 KM Jorpukhuri Circuit.
It was interesting for this group of international tourists to be experiencing the place supported by the narration of the historical and cultural background of the sites they went visiting. They absorbed information on the mythological origins of Kamrupa, and the crossfire history of Ahoms, Mughals, and the British over centuries. The Curators acquainted them with the background history of Jorpukhuri, Latasil, Battle of Itakhuli, Brahmaputra riverside, etc. along with accounts of the city’s people and culture.
The group comprising Jan Klovas, Eva Ekberg, Lena Karlsson, Jan Jonsson, and a few others from Sweden was accompanied by Tour Operator Baro Mavin from Arunachal Pradesh. The walk started near Ugratara Mandir with pit stops at Dighalipukhuri, Latasil playground, Sati Radhika Udyan, Naojaan ending at the Uzan Bazar market.
“Guwahati Walks” began when the curators got together to share their passion for the city by combining short narratives with the ever-popular morning walk. The Jorpukhuri circuit showcases the city’s millennia-old heritage and runs every Sunday of the winter months from 6.45 AM to 8 AM starting and ending at Jorpukhuri.
The team from Sweden who originates from different parts of that country has been in India for nearly 3 weeks starting their journey from Kerala and then moving to Bhubaneshwar and Darjeeling among other places.
