GUWAHATI: An inspection was carried out on Tuesday in different places in Guwahati city. Eight prosecution cases have been registered under the Package Commodities Rules 2011 & Act 2009.

The areas where the vendors were found manipulating weight include Jayanagar, Survey, and the peripheries of Beltola. This check was done by Banjit Thakuria, Assistant Controller of the Legal Metrology Department.

"The violation was found in Survey and Beltola Bazar areas. Chicken, fish and vegetable sellers were found to be doing it," said Baben Das, Assistant Controller, Legal Metrology Department.

The inspection was done under the Package Commodities Rules 2011 & Act, which is for the MRP and the date of the packaging of the product. The Legal Metrology Act 2009 is to establish and enforce standards of weights and measures, regulate trade and commerce in weights, measures, and other goods which are sold or distributed by weight, measure or number and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

Both the acts were seen being violation across the city. The Legal Metrology has even claimed that few shopkeepers have created a nexus where they inform each other before a raid is conducted by the department.
