Guwahati To Re-Implement Road Safety Rules Like New Year

GUWAHATI: On March 5, a meeting of the Kamrup Metropolitan District Road Safety Committee was convened in the meeting room of the District Commissioner's Office, chaired by District Commissioner Sumit Sattawan. The gathering aimed to address the alarming rate of traffic accidents that occurred in February, with a focus on strategies to mitigate accidents in the upcoming month of March.

During the session, DC Sattawan directed both the police and the transport department to implement measures akin to those undertaken during the New Year celebrations.

This approach is aimed at reducing the total number of accidents in March. Notably, the meeting highlighted the recurrent issue of accidents stemming from pedestrians navigating main roads due to encroachment by street vendors.

To tackle this challenge, the District Commissioner urged the Guwahati Municipal Corporation to take immediate action to remove shops encroaching upon footpaths. Furthermore, he emphasised the necessity of declaring a “Street Vending Prohibited Zone” in the near future to deter new traders from occupying previously open footpaths.
