Guwahati: Temples Vandalised, Statues Thrown Away In Bhetapara

GUWAHATI: Two Hindu temples were vandalised after a group of people entered the temples and destroyed the statues of Lord Shiva and Shiva Linga at Bhetapara in Guwahati on Tuesday midnight, May 24.

Reportedly, the group of people destroyed and threw the statues in the Bhetapara drain on Sudha Kantha road in Guwahati.

According to eyewitnesses, they also tried to dash the statue of Lord Ganesha from the other temple located nearby under the Basistha Police Station. Being unable to enter the temple as the temple was protected with grills, they threw away the statue that was placed outside the grill.

A local resident Malati Khataniyar told G Plus, "I run a shop near this temple. My shop was open till 10.30 PM. After closing the shop, I came to the temple and lit the Diyas. It was all fine until then."

Talking to G Plus Bipul Deuri, another local resident said, "Rogues entered a temple and threw the Shiva statue and Shiva-Linga into the drain. It is very shameful to us that such incidents took place in the presence of the administration."

In the morning, people found the broken statues lying down near the drain and they immediately called the Basishtha and Hatigaon Police Stations. People together picked the statues and placed them in the temple. The Shiva-Linga and the hands of the statue of Shiva were broken.

Further, a local resident Bobby Talukdar said, “Some mischievous people want to hurt our religion. We suspect people who are not from our religion. Such an act of hurting our religious emotions, cannot be done by people of our religion.”

Talking to GPlus, the official of Basistha Police Station Bijay Dowarah said, "We will investigate the matter and arrest the criminals soon."
