Guwahati Set to Host Opening Ceremony of FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup

GUWAHATI: In the international football arena, Guwahati is fast racing up to occupy a prominent place. 

The highest governing body of football in the world-FIFA has selected Guwahati for hosting the grand opening ceremony of the Under 17 Women World Cup slated to take place this year on November 2, 2020. 

Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Navi Mumbai will be the venues for the event. “There is unlimited potential for football to grow in India. There is amazing passion too. We have picked venues that offer best logistics and sporting facilities and the platform for the players to perform,” said Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju. He thanked FIFA for allowing India to add an extra venue.

The local organising body of the world cup has finalised the Sarusajai Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium for the opening ceremony of the 7th edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup which will see participation by 17 national teams. 

This is for the first time India is hosting the event since its inception in 2008. 

The tournament will be held between November 2-21, 2020. The concluding function of the tournament will be held at Navi Mumbai.
