Guwahati's Saraighat Bridge develops new cracks; on alert

GUWAHATI: Assam's first rail-cum-road bridge constructed over the Brahmaputra seems to be in dire straits after decades of its construction.

With the passage of time and due to the high volume of traffic, the bridge has developed a fresh set of cracks. While the repair work has been initiated by the Public Works Department (PWD), a high alert has been sounded and as a precaution, the District Administration is allowing only the small vehicles to ply. 

The bridge which was commissioned by Northeast Frontier Railway in the year 1962 and was positioned as the gateway to Guwahati.
