GUWAHATI: A routine car rental turned into a distressing ordeal for Goutam Chutia, a resident of Guwahati, when his rented vehicle was not returned after a 10-day trip to Nagaland. The vehicle was traced to Kohima, where a gang, led by Polas Bonia, extorted ₹1,25,000 from Chutia and his associates under the threat of violence.

Acting on intelligence gathered from the victims, the Basistha Police Station team launched an investigation and initiated a rescue operation. The victims, Achyut Das and Apurba Das, were successfully rescued, and the stolen vehicle was recovered.
The breakthrough came on Tuesday, February 18, when police carried out a well-coordinated pre-dawn operation. Officers stormed a hideout in Borpathar, Golaghat, and apprehended Bhagya Jyoti Saikia, a key member of the gang.
Authorities have confirmed that legal action has been initiated against Saikia.
