GUWAHATI: The Bahniman Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre or the old DC Bungalow at Panbazar in Guwahati will be opened for the public from Sunday, October 3, with the aim of boosting tourism in Assam.

As informed by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), the heritage bungalow will be inaugurated by the Vice President of India M Venkaiah Naidu.

The Government has reportedly renovated the structure at an expense of over Rs 9.6 crores. The renovated structure includes an exhibition space housed in the heritage bungalow itself, an amphitheatre, a new administrative block, a cafeteria, and two external jetties.

The British-era building has been renovated as a tourist spot and is one of the most iconic bungalows of Guwahati. The place where the bungalow is located beside the mighty Brahmaputra is also known as Borphukonar Tilla or Itakhuli Tilla, which was a strategically important location that served as a military base for the Ahoms during the Mughal invasion, and still have cannons laid scattered used in the Battle of Saraighat.

The Scottish-style bungalow was built sometime in the mid-1850s during the administration of British officer Captain Bogle.
