Guwahati: Prolonged Drainage Works In Satgaon Pose Hazardous Conditions

GUWAHATI: In Satgaon’s Pubiran Nagar Path, an ongoing Public Works Department (PWD) drainage construction has led to mounting frustrations among residents, who have voiced concerns over lax safety measures and delayed timelines. Local witnesses report that workers have failed to establish adequate precautions for public safety, turning the area into a hazard for daily commuters.

The issue escalated recently when a motorist carrying his elderly mother encountered an accident near the site. The woman suffered injuries after they fell close to an unmanned concrete mixer. "The area is left completely open with no safety barriers or warning signs. It’s been six months now, and there's no end in sight," shared a resident of that area.

The project, initially set to conclude within three months, is now six months overdue, causing additional strain on local residents who also face intermittent water supply issues directly linked to the construction. “Our lives are affected daily; we’re either avoiding dangerous machinery or dealing with water scarcity,” the local resident added.

When approached by GPlus, a PWD official attributed the delay to recent festivities, adding, “We have instructed the contractors to expedite the completion.” However, residents argue that the response fails to address the absence of safety precautions and the prolonged impact on daily life.

With mounting frustrations and growing safety concerns, locals are now urging the PWD to adhere to safety norms and expedite the project before another accident occurs.
