GUWAHATI: Assam’s first six-lane high-tech extradosed bridge over the Brahmaputra, connecting Guwahati with North Guwahati is expected to be completed around June 2025.

The bridge is nearing completion with over 90% of the construction work already done. The infrastructure project, initially budgeted at ₹2,608.68 crore, has now seen its cost revised to ₹3,030.48 crore.

The foundation stone for the bridge was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2019. The project, undertaken under the ‘Assam Bridge Project’ by the state’s Public Works Department (PWD), is being executed by SP Singla Constructions Pvt. Ltd. in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) mode. The BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) is the primary funding agency for the bridge.

Speaking to GPlus, a source from the PWD confirmed the budget revision. “The budget has been increased to ₹3,030 crore, and it was approved by the concerned authorities at the centre.”

While the original cost estimate stood at ₹2,608.68 crore, several factors such as technical modifications during construction have contributed to the revised budget. Despite the cost escalation, the construction work is reportedly progressing at full speed to meet the mid-2025 deadline.

The six-lane extradosed bridge is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Guwahati and North Guwahati, easing traffic congestion and promoting economic activities across the region. Designed with advanced engineering techniques, the bridge is expected to withstand high seismic activity, considering Assam’s vulnerability to earthquakes.

Once operational, the bridge will not only reduce travel time but also play a crucial role in boosting trade, tourism, and socio-economic integration within Assam and the broader Northeast region.

With more than 90% of the construction work already completed, the focus now shifts to the final phases, including surface finishing, safety checks, and structural audits. Only then it can be marked as a new chapter in Assam’s infrastructure landscape.
