GMC Continues Neglecting Bad Roads in Guwahati Despite Repeated Complaints By Residents

GUWAHATI: Despite repetitive complaints, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) continues to neglect the poor road conditions of Devi Singh Lane in Guwahati's Manipuri Basti area.

This lane, which was already in a dilapidated condition, continues to make life hell for the 700 to 800 residents of the locality.

The 700-meter stretch of the road has been in a shambles and has been neglected for the past several years, claim residents and despite having raised concerns with authorities, the situation does not seem to improve for them.

The road remains uneven and has large potholes which have made matters worse for the residents.

People face trouble commuting to their places of work, schools, or colleges.

“No vehicle or four-wheeler can pass through this road and even pedestrians find it difficult to walk through this lane that is filled with potholes,” said Mrinmoy Mukherjee a resident of Devi Sigh Lane while talking to G Plus.

He had earlier raised similar issues pertaining to the lane in September 2019.

"After G Plus published the news in September 2019, authorities came and visited the site. They gave us an assurance that the lane would be fixed but it is close to 10 months now and no progress has been made," said Mrinmoy.

Locals had earlier claimed that the road was dug up three years ago to lay down some water pipes, but was never repaired properly again.

The rain worsens the condition of the lane as it fills up with mud and sludge and becomes flooded after even a short spell of rain. Residents had told G Plus earlier that several minor accidents of the residents have also taken place on the road.

Further, the residents also complained that Guwahati's Devi Sigh Lane only has one streetlight in the entire 700 meters stretch.

They had written to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation's (GMC) Commissioner but no action has been taken till now.

The locals of the area have also approached the MLA and GDD minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya but could not get a favorable response.
