GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has announced a deadline of March 31 for the mandatory payment of property taxes in Guwahati.

Property owners in Guwahati have been asked by the GMC to make their outstanding payments before the deadline in order to avoid penalties and attachment of their property, along with delinking of their holding number from the Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL).

Additionally, the GMC has started an initiative of door-to-door collection of property taxes this year, under which 195 women from local self-help groups (SHGs) have been appointed as ‘Poura Sakhis’, who will personally visit people’s houses to collect property taxes from their doorsteps with POS machines, in order to make the process of property tax payment hassle-free and easier and to eradicate any confusion faced by taxpayers.

The Property Taxes may have seen a sharp increase due to the increase in land value rates since 2008 and taxpayers are recommended to ask for re-assessment using the re-assessment module and explore the 50% scheme if the tax increase is more than twice the previous rates.
