GUWAHATI: As many as 108 acclaimed films from over 50 countries will be screened in the second edition of the Guwahati International Film Festival (GIFF), which will begin on October 25. A total of nine films from northeast India will also be screened at the festival.
Bhoga Khirikee (Broken Window) directed by internationally acclaimed Jahnu Barua will be the opening film for Guwahati International Film Festival 2018, to be showcased at 6:30 PM on Thursday at the Kalakshetra main theatre.
Further, as a tribute to director Juhnu Barua, two other films will be screened - Aparoopa by Jahnu Barua and Prabhati Pakhir Gaan directed by Munin Baruah.
Six films including Kaaneen (A Secret Search) by Monjul Baruah, Calendar by Himjyoti Talukdar, Chor by Khanjan Kishore Nath, Aamrityu by Arup Manna, Xhoixobote Dhemalite by Bidyut Kotoky and Phehujali by Biswajeet Bora will feature in the northeast competition section of the festival.
With the region of focus being ASEAN countries, a record number of 20 ambassadors from different countries are expected to take part in the GIFF, along with over 30 countries sending their cultural delegates.
The seven-day film extravaganza will see the participation of nearly 35 film personalities from abroad with their flicks, while Ambassadors from Lithuania, Myanmar, Argentina, Latvia, Estonia, Serbia, Singapore, and Malaysia are likely to be present, informed Pabitra Margherita.
The festival is being organised by the Assam government-owned Jyoti Chitraban (Film Studio) Society in association with Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film and Television Institute. Eminent filmmakers Buddhadeb Dasgupta and Shaji N Karun will be the chief guests during opening and closing ceremonies of the festival respectively.
