GUWAHATI: The International Day of the Girl Child was celebrated at the Tarini Choudhury Govt. Girls HS and MP School, Guwahati through a collaborative effort between UTSAH, a child rights organisation, and Assam Police on October 11, 2023.
This significant day, declared by the United Nations in 2011, is observed worldwide to recognise and empower girls, while addressing the various challenges they face, including safety and discrimination issues.
An enlightening interactive session was organised for the female students of TC School in Guwahati by UTSAH with the support of Assam Police. This session aimed to empower and educate these young girls.
The interactive sessions were conducted by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP), Sarmistha Barua, and Additional Superintendent of Police, Geetanjali Doley, both women police officers of Assam. During the sessions, they engaged with the students on various crucial aspects related to girl children, encompassing education, mental health, safety, and online protection.
“My own journey from being a little girl child to a senior police officer in my state was full of ups and downs and yet I never lost hope. Girl children always need an encouraging, non-discriminatory and protective environment to achieve their big dreams. For me, we have to make every day, a day for girl children,” AIGP Barua stated.
