There's a special place nestled between the hills in Guwahati that many don’t know about yet – the Assam Buddha Vihar. It's like a hidden gem, quietly sitting on a green hill near NH 27. If you pass by, you might see it, and it's truly something to marvel at. Picture a tall Buddha statue on top, almost like a peaceful guardian surrounded by nature's beauty. As you get closer, the trees around it share stories of calmness, making you feel welcomed to explore the hidden wonders waiting inside. It's a charming spot that not many have discovered, but it's definitely worth a visit.

But there's more to Assam Buddha Vihar than just its beauty—it holds a touching story of love and determination. Established 26 years ago by C.S. Lama, a compassionate Buddhist woman, with the support of the Government of Assam, this Vihar holds a special place in the hearts of locals. C.S. Lama, affectionately known as 'Guru Mai,' hailed from Bhutan and received her education in Darjeeling. She and her husband, both Buddhists, ventured into Assam to run their businesses, Lama Automobiles and Lama Transport.

However, a tragic twist of fate, the sudden demise of her husband, transformed her life's purpose. Her sole mission became helping those in need. C.S. Lama's vision was to provide free education to underprivileged children of different religious backgrounds and castes. She also imparted teachings in music and art. In her memory, a Parinirvana Stupa, signifying the Buddha's passage into Nirvana, was erected. This Stupa stands as a testament to her legacy and the noble cause she championed.

Entering the tranquil grounds of Assam Buddha Vihar, you're greeted by a sense of calm and spirituality in the air. The monastery itself is a masterpiece of Buddhist architecture. The domes, shrines, and fluttering Buddhist flags exude an aura of tranquillity. Even without a strong wind, the flags seem to dance with a mind of their own. They symbolise unity within diversity, people coming together while retaining their unique identities. Intricate Buddhist symbols adorn the walls, adding to the already captivating ambience.

Once you reach the summit, a small viewpoint provides an awe-inspiring vista of the entire city. Here, the air is filled with peace and freshness, a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of Guwahati. The massive rocks offer perfect spots for reflection, while the cool breeze provides relief from the heat. The abundance of trees casts a soothing shade, creating an ideal haven to reconnect with nature.

One common concern when visiting places of religious significance is whether people of different faiths are welcome. According to the Guruji of the monastery, all are welcome, regardless of their religion.

Throughout the day, Assam Buddha Vihar is filled with the sounds of prayers and chants, bringing a sense of unity and belonging to all who visit. The sanctuary holds morning and evening aartis, with an additional Mahākāla pooja in the evening, paying homage to the form of Shiva known as Mahākāla. Any day is a good day to visit Assam Buddha Vihar, but two significant festivals stand out: Buddha Jayanti and Buddha Purnima. These celebrations are not to be missed, as they offer a glimpse into the rich traditions and warm community that thrives here. Assam Buddha Vihar, with its blend of peace, natural beauty, and spiritual significance, is a must-visit destination for tourists, devotees, seekers of knowledge, and anyone yearning for a retreat from the chaos of daily life.

Assam Buddha Vihar, with its calm atmosphere and welcoming spirit, invites visitors to embark on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth—a journey that transcends time and space, leading to the heart of humanity's collective soul. In the quiet embrace of Assam Buddha Vihar, amidst the rustling leaves and gentle breeze, one finds solace, inspiration, and a renewed sense of purpose—a sanctuary for the spirit, a haven for the soul, and a testament to the power of love and compassion in our lives.
