GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has decided to prepare identification cards for over 14,000 street vendors in the city.

The 18th meeting of the Town Vending Committee was held this month.

It was decided to set ID cards and certificates of vending for 14,171 street vendors before March 31 and also prepare an Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for its distribution. The IDs and certificates will be distributed after a survey as per the Street Vendors Act, 2014.

The current status of the existing 105 ID card holders that were issued in 2015 will also be reviewed.

Sources said that a geo-mapping will be done across Guwahati to demarcate permanent location to each and every street vendor. Reportedly, the GMC is also mulling to provide them with uniforms.

However, members of the Street Vendors’ Association of Assam have opined that they are sceptical about the implementation of the decisions as committed.

“Similar promises were made in the previous Town Vending Committee Meeting held in September 2021. The GMC promised to provide us with 10 vending zones in just 3 months' time. However, not even one has been materialised to date. There is no guarantee that the recent promises will be a reality,” a member of the Association said.
