GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) holding no./assessment no. of all households and establishments of the city will be mandatorily merged with their respective electricity bills. The decision has been taken by the GMC in collaboration with the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) to ensure proper revenue collection from all.
An order has been issued by the APDCL whereby the submission of GMC holding no./assessment no. has been mandated along with other necessary documents while applying for new electricity connections. For the existing customers, the numbers will be updated in the IT infrastructure of APDCL including the website, mobile applications, etc, within a period of 60 days by June 30, 2022.
A senior official of GMC told G Plus that over 1 lakh households and establishments under its jurisdiction are without a holding number, which has hampered its revenue earning. "People have been flouting the norms and not clearing off their taxes. With the addition of the holding number in the electricity bill, everyone will come under our radar."
The official further added that if all taxes are regularly paid and the licenses renewed as necessary, the GMC could have an annual turnover of Rs 200 crore, which is significantly lapsing due to the defaulters.
For the financial year 2021-22, GMC collected Rs 113 crore as a record collection in the Corporation's history since its incorporation. Despite the record collection, the amount is much less than it actually should be, officials said.
