GUWAHATI: The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), in collaboration with India Meteorological Department (IMD) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has developed a fully automated web-based Flood Early Warning System (FEWS) to predict urban floods in Guwahati.

The tool, launched on Thursday, August 13, can be replicated to predict urban floods in any part of the country.

“The tool uses the weather forecasting data from IMD and simulates the floods that any forecasted heavy rainfall event can bring over the city region. The tool also sends out alerts to the concerned agencies if the rainfall or flood level crosses its threshold,” said Prasoon Singh, project lead, earth science and climate change, TERI -- a New Delhi based sustainable development thinktank.
