GUWAHATI: Queer Pride Guwahati (QPG), a collective of LGBTQIA+ volunteers and allies, held a press meeting on December 15, 2023, at the Gauhati Press Club. The discussion centred around the upcoming tenth-year Pride Rally scheduled for December 17, 2023. The press meet also included an orientation on queer-sensitive reporting based on the latest media guidelines for covering news on the LGBTQ+ community by the Press Council of India.
Representatives from organisations such as the Humsafar Trust, Anaajoree, Drishti, and Xobdo, along with the Transgender Welfare Board of Assam and the National Council for Transgender Persons, formed the panel. The discussion delved into the history of the queer movement in Assam, highlighting efforts to create safe spaces and advocate for gender-neutral facilities in educational institutions.
The panelists emphasised the intersectionality of sexual health within the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, emphasising the need for tailored healthcare approaches that consider diverse identities. The press meeting aimed to provide insights into best practices, terminology, and considerations for reporting LGBTQIA+ issues, fostering understanding and support within the media landscape.
