Guwahati: Dighalipukhuri Park's Name Reinstated

GUWAHATI: Following the public outcry and discontent over the alleged renaming of Dighalipukhuri Park to "Entartica Dighalipukhuri," the original name has been reinstated as confirmed by Assam Tourism Development Corporation.

In addition, amidst the leasing decision, there also have been reports of increased entry ticket prices at Dighalipukhuri. Visitors now have to pay ₹20 for an entry ticket, a hike attributed to the introduction of various water sports activities within the park.

The Assam Tourism Department Corporation (ATDC) has confirmed that the management and development rights of the historic lake have been awarded to a private company through a transparent tendering process.

Located 1 km away from Guwahati Railway Station, Dighalipukhuri is a prominent tourist attraction in the city that encompasses a sprawling area of gardens and a pond, occupying approximately 17-18 bigha of land.

Historically, the Ahoms utilised the pukhuri as a naval dockyard. However, its connection to the Brahmaputra River was eventually severed. During the colonial era, the filled portion of the lake became the foundation for the construction of the Circuit House.

Subsequently, the newly filled area was further developed to accommodate the Gauhati High Court building.
