Guwahati: Desilting Work On in Full Swing Ahead of Flood Season

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) began the desilting of river channels and city drains on May 5, 2021, and ramped up the process from May 20 onwards. The desiltation work is presently carried out in three shifts with an aim to make Guwahati city clean and flood-free.

On Sunday, May 23, the Commissioner of GMC, led a team comprising of Additional Commissioner, Joint Commissioner, Chief Engineer, Divisional Engineers, and other officials of GMC and visited various locations of Guwahati to inspect the status of desiltation activities that is going on in the city. The team also interacted with the general public, concerned NGOs under GMC, sanitation workers, etc., and evaluated the scope of improvements in the field of garbage disposal, ways to redress water logging problems, among others.

The team led by the Commissioner, GMC, inspected desilting work near Ambari Lamb road junction and the Ulubari area. He also addressed the concerns/grievances of residents of the Professors Colony near Dighalipukhuri and interacted with the public in general in presence of concerned Divisional Engineers of GMC and NGOs concerned with the garbage disposal. 

The Commissioner while assuring speedy disposal of general waste, requested the general public to prohibit others from throwing single-use plastic bags, bottles, etc in the drain nearby to prevent clogging of the same.

The GMC Commissioner also visited the Jalukbari area to check waterlogging points in and around the Gauhati University (GU) campus and proposed a drain near Jalukbari Police Station. He visited the wetland area behind GU and proposed a water body, visited near Lachit Park, and Sadilapur road to drain out the water from GU Campus. He then interacted with the general public of that area and requested them to clear off water logging areas near their residence and assured that water will subsequently be drained out in consultation with NF railways. Thereafter, the Commissioner visited Khanajan and examined the desilting of the Khanajan Channel.
